Ablation for arrhythmias is a minimally invasive heart procedure used to treat abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias). It works by using heat (radiofrequency energy) or cold (cryoablation) to destroy tiny areas of heart tissue that cause irregular electrical signals. This helps restore a normal heart rhythm, relieve symptoms like palpitations, and reduce the risk of complications such as stroke or heart failure.
Ablation is a procedure where catheters (thin tubes) are guided into the heart through blood vessels. Once the abnormal area is located, energy is applied to block or eliminate faulty electrical pathways that cause arrhythmias.
Ablation may be suggested for patients with:
It is often recommended when medications don’t work, cause side effects, or when long-term drug therapy is not preferred.
The procedure is done in a cardiac electrophysiology lab under local anesthesia and sedation. Catheters are inserted through the groin and guided into the heart. Mapping systems identify the abnormal rhythm source, and then radiofrequency (heat). The procedure usually takes 1–2 hours.
Yes. Ablation is considered a safe and effective treatment, with 95% success rates in many types of arrhythmias. Risks include bleeding at the catheter site, blood clots, heart puncture, or recurrence of arrhythmia + complete heart blood. Complications are uncommon when performed by experienced specialists.
Most patients go home after one day. Light activities can resume in a couple of days, but heavy lifting or strenuous exercise should be avoided for about a week. Some patients may feel mild chest discomfort or skipped beats during healing.
For many patients, ablation provides long-term relief and can significantly reduce or eliminate arrhythmias. Success rates vary depending on the type of arrhythmia and patient factors. Sometimes, repeat procedures may be needed.
While medications can control heart rhythm, they may not work for everyone and may have side effects. Ablation offers a more permanent solution for many patients, especially with conditions like atrial fibrillation or SVT.
If you are living with an irregular heartbeat, palpitations, or atrial fibrillation, our Electrophysiology & Cardiology Team at Baby Memorial Hospitals specializes in advanced ablation treatments for arrhythmias.
