Overview

Adenoidectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove the adenoids — small lymphoid tissues located at the back of the nose (nasopharynx), above the roof of the mouth. These tissues help fight infections in childhood but can become enlarged or chronically infected, leading to nasal obstruction, snoring, breathing difficulties, or recurrent ear infections. The procedure is safe, effective, and commonly performed in children to improve breathing, sleep quality, and ear health.

What is adenoidectomy?

Adenoidectomy is a minor surgical procedure to remove the adenoids when they become chronically enlarged or infected. The surgery helps restore normal breathing through the nose and reduces the frequency of throat and ear infections. It is often performed along with tonsillectomy or grommet (ear tube) insertion in children with recurrent infections or hearing problems.

When is adenoidectomy recommended?

Your ENT specialist may recommend adenoidectomy if your child has:

  • Chronic mouth breathing or nasal blockage
  • Loud snoring or sleep apnea
  • Recurrent or chronic sinus infections
  • Frequent ear infections (otitis media) or fluid in the middle ear
  • Speech or feeding problems due to nasal obstruction

In adults, adenoidectomy may be performed in rare cases of chronic nasal obstruction or infection.

How is adenoidectomy performed?
  • The procedure is done under general anesthesia.
  • The surgeon removes the adenoid tissue through the mouth using special instruments.
  • No external incision is made, and bleeding is minimal.
  • The surgery usually takes 20–30 minutes, and patients can go home the same day.
Is adenoidectomy painful?

Adenoidectomy is not painful during surgery, as it’s performed under anesthesia. After the procedure, you may experience mild throat discomfort or nasal congestion, which typically resolves within a few days with medication and rest.

Is adenoidectomy safe?

Yes. Adenoidectomy is a safe and routine procedure with very low risk. Minor side effects such as mild bleeding, sore throat, or temporary nasal voice may occur but resolve quickly. The benefits far outweigh the risks in most cases.

What is recovery like after an adenoidectomy?
  • Hospital stay: Usually day-care (same-day discharge)
  • Diet: Soft, cool foods for 2–3 days
  • Pain relief: Mild pain medication as advised
  • Rest: Light activity for a few days
  • Return to school: Usually after 3–5 days

Most children breathe better, sleep quietly, and experience fewer infections within weeks after surgery.

What are the benefits of adenoidectomy?
  • Improved nasal breathing and airflow
  • Reduction in snoring and sleep apnea
  • Fewer throat and ear infections
  • Better speech, eating, and sleep quality
  • Improved hearing and overall health
What precautions should be taken after surgery?
  • Avoid hot foods or strenuous activity for 5–7 days
  • Keep your child hydrated with plenty of fluids
  • Report any persistent bleeding, fever, or breathing difficulty to your doctor immediately
  • Follow-up visits are scheduled to ensure complete healing
