Bronchoscopy is a procedure that allows doctors to look inside the airways (bronchi) using a thin, flexible tube with a camera called a bronchoscope. It is used to diagnose lung conditions, take tissue samples (biopsy), remove blockages, or treat certain lung problems. Bronchoscopy is usually safe and performed under mild sedation or anesthesia.
Bronchoscopy is a medical procedure that helps doctors see the inside of the lungs and airways. It is performed to investigate symptoms like persistent cough, coughing up blood, unexplained chest X-ray findings, or breathing problems. It can also be used to remove foreign objects, mucus, or tumors blocking the airway.
During the procedure, a thin bronchoscope is gently inserted through the nose or mouth, down the throat, and into the lungs. The camera at the tip provides a clear view of the airways. Doctors may collect samples, remove obstructions, or apply treatments. The procedure usually takes 30–60 minutes.
Flexible bronchoscopy: The most common type, using a flexible tube under sedation.
Rigid bronchoscopy: Performed under general anesthesia with a rigid scope, often for removing large blockages or placing stents.
No. Patients are given sedation or anesthesia, so they do not feel pain during the procedure. Some people may experience mild throat discomfort, cough, or hoarseness afterward, which usually goes away in a few days.
Bronchoscopy is generally safe. Possible risks include sore throat, nosebleed, mild fever, or temporary breathing difficulty. Rare but serious risks include bleeding from biopsy sites, infection, or after doing biopsy (pneumothorax)
Most patients go home the same day after a few hours of monitoring. Eating or drinking is avoided for a few hours until the throat is no longer numb. Mild fatigue or cough is common for a day or two. Full recovery is usually quick.
Patients are usually asked not to eat or drink for 6–12 hours before the procedure. Certain medications, especially blood thinners, may need to be adjusted. Your doctor will provide specific instructions.
