Overview

Published with the inputs from Dr  Jithin C R, Associate Consultant, Orthopaedic And Arthroscopic Surgery,  Baby Memorial Hospitals - Kannur

A labral tear occurs when the cartilage ring (labrum) that stabilizes the shoulder or hip joint gets torn. This can result from injury, overuse, or degenerative changes. Labral tears often cause pain, clicking, instability, and reduced range of motion. Labral tear repair surgery restores stability and function, helping patients return to daily activities or sports.

What is a labral tear?
  • In the shoulder, the labrum is a rim of cartilage that deepens the socket and stabilizes the joint. Tears may occur due to falls, repetitive throwing, or dislocation.
  • In the hip, the labrum lines the hip socket, providing cushioning and stability. Tears may result from injury, hip impingement, or arthritis.
Do all labral tears need surgery?

Not always. Small tears may be managed with rest, medications, physiotherapy, and activity modification. Surgery is recommended if pain, instability, or restricted movement persists despite conservative treatment.

How is labral tear repair performed?

Most labral repairs are done using arthroscopy (keyhole surgery):

  • Small incisions are made around the joint.
  • A camera and instruments are inserted.
  • Torn cartilage is reattached using suture  anchors.

In some cases, trimming or reconstruction of the labrum is done.

Is labral tear repair safe?

Yes. Arthroscopic labral repair is minimally invasive and has a high success rate. Risks such as infection, stiffness, or incomplete healing are rare when performed by experienced orthopedic surgeons.

What is recovery like after labral tear repair?
  • Hospital stay: Usually  one day hospital stay.
  • Rehabilitation: Physiotherapy begins soon after surgery to restore strength and mobility.
  • Return to activities: Light activities in 4–6 weeks, sports in 4-6 months, sports depending on progress.

Recovery requires patience, as full healing and return to peak performance take time.

Will I regain full function after labral tear repair?

Most patients experience significant pain relief, improved stability, and better joint movement. Athletes often return to their previous level of performance after proper rehab, although outcomes depend on injury severity and adherence to recovery protocols
