Overview

Laparoscopic hysterectomy is a minimally invasive surgery to remove the uterus through small incisions in the abdomen. It is performed using a laparoscope (a thin tube with a camera) and special surgical instruments. Compared to open surgery, it offers less pain, quicker recovery, and smaller scars.

What is a laparoscopic hysterectomy?

It is a surgical procedure where the uterus is removed using keyhole incisions in the abdomen. In some cases, the cervix, fallopian tubes, or ovaries may also be removed depending on the medical condition.

Why is laparoscopic hysterectomy done?

It is recommended for conditions such as:

  • Uterine fibroids causing pain or heavy bleeding
  • Endometriosis
  • Adenomyosis
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding not responding to other treatments
  • Uterine prolapse
  • Certain gynecologic cancers (in selected cases)
Is laparoscopic hysterectomy safe?

Yes. It is a safe and well-established procedure when performed by experienced gynecologic surgeons. Risks include infection, bleeding, or injury to nearby organs (bladder, bowel), but serious complications are rare.

How is laparoscopic hysterectomy performed?
  • Small incisions are made in the abdomen.
  • A laparoscope and instruments are inserted.
  • The uterus is detached and removed, often through the vagina or by morcellation.
  • The incisions are closed with sutures or surgical glue.
What is recovery like after laparoscopic hysterectomy?
  • Most patients go home within 1–2 days.
  • Return to normal activities usually happens in 2–4 weeks, compared to 6–8 weeks with open surgery.
  • Light exercise is encouraged early, but heavy lifting should be avoided for at least 4–6 weeks.
  • Pain is generally less compared to open surgery.
Will laparoscopic hysterectomy affect hormones or daily life?

If only the uterus is removed and the ovaries are preserved, hormone levels remain unaffected. If ovaries are also removed, menopause occurs immediately, and hormone replacement therapy may be considered. Daily life usually improves due to relief from symptoms like heavy bleeding or pelvic pain.

What are the benefits of laparoscopic over open hysterectomy?
  • Smaller incisions and minimal scarring
  • Less post-operative pain
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Faster recovery and return to work
  • Lower risk of wound infection
