Overview

Published with the inputs from Dr Anne George, Senior Consultant, Dermatology And Cosmetology,  Baby Memorial Hospitals- Thodupuzha

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses fine needles to create tiny punctures in the skin. This stimulates the body’s natural healing response, boosting collagen and elastin production. It is widely used for improving skin texture, reducing scars, fine lines, wrinkles, and pigmentation, and rejuvenating the skin.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling involves the use of a device with very fine needles that create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. This triggers collagen and elastin production, leading to smoother, firmer, and younger-looking skin.

What skin concerns can microneedling treat?

It is effective for:

  • Acne scars and surgical scars
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Large pores
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Stretch marks
  • Pigmentation and sun damage
  • Early signs of aging
Is microneedling safe?

Yes. Microneedling is considered safe when performed by trained dermatologists. Side effects like redness, mild swelling, or sensitivity may occur for 1–2 days, but serious complications are rare.

How many microneedling sessions are needed?

The number of sessions depends on the skin condition being treated:

  • General skin rejuvenation: 3–4 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart
  • Acne scars or deep wrinkles: 4–6 sessions may be required
  • Visible improvements are usually seen after the first few sessions, with results continuing to improve over time.
What is recovery like after microneedling?
  • Mild redness, warmth, or swelling for 24–48 hours
  • Makeup can usually be applied after 1–2 days
  • Sun protection is very important after the procedure
  • Most patients return to normal routine immediately, making it a popular “lunchtime procedure”
Can microneedling be combined with other treatments?

Yes. Microneedling can be combined with PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma), serums, or radiofrequency microneedling to enhance results, especially for scars and skin rejuvenation.

Who should avoid microneedling?

It may not be suitable for patients with:

  • Active skin infections or acne outbreaks
  • Keloid scars or poor wound healing
  • Certain skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis
  • Use of strong blood-thinners (must consult a doctor)
