Overview

Published with the inputs from Dr. Salal N, Specialist - Interventional Radiology, Meitra Hospital, Kozhikodetional Radiology, Meitra Hospital, Kozhikode

Uterine Artery Embolisation (UAE) is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure used to treat uterine fibroids — benign (non-cancerous) growths that can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and pressure symptoms.

During UAE, the blood supply to the fibroids is blocked, causing them to shrink over time and relieving symptoms without removing the uterus. The procedure is performed by an interventional radiologist under image guidance.

What is uterine artery embolisation (UAE)?

UAE is a procedure where tiny particles are injected into the arteries supplying the uterus to block the blood flow to fibroids. This causes the fibroids to shrink and symptoms to improve, while preserving the uterus.

When is uterine artery embolisation recommended?

Your doctor may recommend UAE if you have:

  • Symptomatic uterine fibroids (causing heavy bleeding, pain, or pressure)
  • Enlarged uterus due to multiple fibroids
  • Failed medical treatment or wish to avoid surgery
  • Adenomyosis (thickening of the uterine wall) in selected cases

It is especially useful for women seeking uterus-sparing alternatives to hysterectomy.

How is uterine artery embolisation performed?
  • The procedure is done under local anesthesia and mild sedation.
  • A thin catheter is inserted through the groin or wrist artery and guided to the uterine arteries using X-ray imaging.
  • Micro particles  are injected to block the blood flow to the fibroids.
  • The procedure usually takes 45-60 minutes and requires no major incision or stitches.
Is UAE painful?

You won’t feel pain during the procedure, thanks to anesthesia. Some women may experience cramping, mild pain, or low-grade fever afterward - known as post-embolisation syndrome- which resolves within a few days with medication and rest.

Is uterine artery embolisation safe?

Yes. UAE is a safe and proven procedure performed by trained interventional radiologists. Complications are rare and may include temporary pain, infection, or menstrual irregularities. The uterus and ovaries are preserved in most patients.

What is recovery like after UAE?
  • Hospital stay: Usually 1 day
  • Recovery time: 7–10 days (much faster than surgery)
  • Return to normal activities: Within a week
  • Follow-up: Regular ultrasound or MRI to monitor fibroid shrinkage
  • Most women experience significant relief from symptoms within 3–6 months.
Can I get pregnant after uterine artery embolisation?

Many women have successful pregnancies after UAE, but it may not be suitable for those planning immediate conception. Your doctor at BMH will discuss fertility goals and recommend the most appropriate treatment option.

Who performs uterine artery embolisation?

UAE is performed by an interventional radiologist, a specialist trained in image-guided, minimally invasive procedures. The treatment is often done in collaboration with gynaecologists to ensure comprehensive care.
