Dr Bigesh Unnikrishnan Nair
Dr. Bigesh Unnikrishnan Nair is a distinguished Senior Interventional Cardiologist and Director of Cardiovascular Interventions, with more than 24 years of experience in cardiovascular care across India and the Middle East. He has developed extensive expertise in advanced interventional cardiology, with a particular focus on complex coronary interventions, high risk cardiac procedures, and the management of patients requiring specialized catheter based cardiovascular treatment.

His academic journey has been marked by notable achievements and recognition. He secured First Rank in the University Examination for MD in Internal Medicine, demonstrating exceptional academic performance. He also secured First Prize in the Association of Physicians of Gujarat Annual Inter Medical College Quiz Competition and was Runner-up in the All Kerala Psychiatry Gold Medal Examination. In 2014, he received the prestigious Best Abstract Presentation Award at the National Conference of the Cardiological Society of India for his research on rheumatic heart disease.

Over the course of his career, he has performed thousands of coronary and non coronary cardiovascular interventions, gaining extensive experience in both routine and highly complex cardiac procedures. His specialized expertise includes Primary Angioplasty, Complex Coronary Interventions, Complex High-Risk Indicated Procedures (CHIP), IVUS-guided Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), Rotablation, protection-device-assisted interventions, bypass graft interventions involving SVG and LIMA grafts, and procedures requiring mechanical circulatory support such as Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP).

His expertise is particularly valuable in the management of complex and high risk coronary artery disease, including challenging coronary lesions and patients requiring advanced interventional strategies. His approach combines detailed clinical assessment, advanced coronary imaging, appropriate procedural planning and contemporary interventional techniques to provide safe and effective treatment for patients with complex cardiovascular conditions.

His interventional expertise extends beyond coronary artery disease to a broad range of structural, peripheral, and non-coronary cardiovascular interventions. His experience includes Peripheral Angioplasty, Carotid Angioplasty, Renal Angioplasty, Balloon Mitral Commissurotomy, Permanent Pacemaker Implantation, AICD Implantation, Pericardiocentesis, Aortic Valvuloplasty, and Alcohol Septal Ablation. His comprehensive procedural experience enables him to manage a wide spectrum of cardiovascular conditions requiring specialized intervention.

Alongside his interventional practice, he has extensive expertise in non invasive cardiology and advanced cardiac diagnostics. He has independently interpreted more than 28,000 adult and paediatric echocardiograms, including both Transthoracic Echocardiography (TTE) and Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE). He also has extensive experience in Treadmill Stress Testing (TMT), Holter monitoring, and Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM). His experience in both invasive and non-invasive cardiac evaluation allows for a comprehensive understanding of complex cardiovascular conditions and supports informed treatment planning.

His professional journey has included senior clinical and leadership roles at leading healthcare institutions in Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Qatar. He has served as a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Director of Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories, Chief Consultant Cardiologist, and Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at various institutions. During his tenure as Director of Cardiovascular Interventions, he was responsible for managing advanced cardiac interventions and supporting comprehensive catheterisation services.

He also has significant international experience in Doha, Qatar, where he served as a Specialist Cardiologist at leading healthcare institutions. His international practice involved the management of inpatients, outpatients, and emergency cardiac cases, along with interdepartmental consultations and advanced cardiac diagnostic services. His experience in the Middle East has further strengthened his ability to manage diverse cardiovascular presentations and complex cardiac cases within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

Academic medicine and professional education remain an important part of his career. Since 2015, he has served as Section Editor for Valvular Heart Disease for the Kerala Heart Journal, the official journal of the Cardiological Society of India, Kerala Chapter. He has contributed to scientific literature through publications in peer-reviewed medical journals, with particular academic interest in the epidemiology and clinical aspects of rheumatic heart disease. His research on rheumatic heart disease in Kerala was presented at the National Annual Conference of the Cardiological Society of India in 2014, where it received the Best Abstract Presentation Award.

He is recognized through prestigious professional affiliations, including Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and Fellow of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (FSCAI). He is also a Life Member of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and is associated with leading professional organizations in the field of cardiology.

With more than two decades of experience in advanced interventional cardiology, complex coronary interventions, high-risk cardiac procedures, cardiac imaging, and international cardiovascular practice, Dr. Bigesh Unnikrishnan Nair brings together extensive clinical expertise, academic excellence, procedural experience, and a commitment to contemporary cardiac care. As Director – Cardiovascular Interventions, he is dedicated to advancing comprehensive cardiovascular services and providing evidence based, patient focused care, particularly for individuals requiring complex and high risk interventional cardiac procedures.
