India’s First Endoscopic Coccygectomy Using UB Endoscopy Performed at BMH Kannur
Kannur: A 16-year-old boy from Kelakam, Kannur, who experienced severe and persistent tailbone pain that interfered with his daily life, underwent a rare minimally invasive surgical procedure at Baby Memorial Hospital (BMH), Kannur. Following specialist evaluation, he was diagnosed with a condition requiring coccygectomy, the surgical removal of the coccyx, or tailbone.
The procedure was performed by Dr. Hari Krishnan, UB Endoscopic Spine Surgeon at BMH Kannur, using UB Endoscopy, a keyhole technique that enables surgeons to access the surgical area through a minimally invasive approach. According to the hospital, this is the first coccygectomy performed using UB Endoscopy in India. The technique provided magnified visualisation of the coccyx and surrounding structures, helping the surgical team carry out the procedure with precision.
Coccygectomy is traditionally performed through an open surgical approach. The use of endoscopic technology offers a minimally invasive alternative, with the potential to reduce surgical wound size and tissue trauma. Following the procedure, the teenager recovered well, was discharged from the hospital and returned to his normal routine.
