Spinal angiography is a specialized imaging test that provides detailed pictures of the blood vessels supplying the spinal cord. What is spinal angiography?
Spinal angiography is an invasive imaging procedure used to visualize the arteries and veins of the spinal cord. It helps detect abnormal connections or blockages in the spinal blood vessels that may cause pain, weakness, or neurological symptoms.
When is spinal angiography recommended?
Your doctor may recommend this procedure if you have:

How is spinal angiography performed?
The procedure is done in a neurointerventional suite under local anesthesia and mild sedation.
A thin catheter is inserted through the groin artery and guided to the arteries supplying the spinal cord.
A contrast dye is injected while X-ray images are captured in real time.
The procedure usually takes 1–2 hours, depending on complexity.
Is spinal angiography painful?
No. The procedure itself is not painful because local anesthesia is used at the insertion site. Patients may feel mild pressure or warmth when the dye is injected.
Is spinal angiography safe?
Yes. It is a safe and well-established diagnostic procedure when performed by experienced neurointerventional specialists.
Possible but rare risks include:
Allergic reaction to contrast dye
Groin bruising or bleeding
Temporary numbness or weakness (extremely rare neurological complications)
What is recovery like after spinal angiography?
Patients are observed for 4–6 hours after the procedure to monitor for bleeding or discomfort.
Rest and limited movement are advised for 24 hours.
Normal activities can usually be resumed the next day unless otherwise advised.
