Events & Updates | Launch of PRISM Clinic

Baby Memorial Hospital (BMH), Kozhikode, has launched PRISM (Paediatric Rare, Inherited, Skeletal & Muscular Disorders), a dedicated clinic aimed at providing comprehensive, coordinated care for children living with rare genetic, skeletal and muscular conditions. The clinic was inaugurated by Dhanya Ravi, disability rights advocate and motivational speaker, at a function held at Hotel Tiara, Kozhikode, on October 22. Children undergoing treatment at the hospital and their families attended the event. The official logo of the clinic was unveiled by the chief guest along with the children.

Children with rare genetic, skeletal and muscular disorders often require consultations with multiple specialists, sometimes across different hospitals, making the treatment process physically and emotionally demanding for families. PRISM aims to ease this burden by bringing specialists from various disciplines together under one roof, ensuring coordinated consultations and a unified treatment plan for each child.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. K. G. Alexander, Chairman of BMH, Kozhikode, who presided over the function, said that the initiative was the result of sustained effort and dedication to addressing the challenges faced by children with rare disorders and their families. He highlighted the importance of making specialised healthcare more accessible through an integrated approach.

The presence of Dhanya Ravi added special significance to the occasion. Born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a rare genetic condition that makes bones extremely fragile, she has overcome hundreds of fractures to emerge as an accomplished writer and motivational speaker. With roots in Palakkad and based in Bengaluru, she has also received the National Award for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities in the Role Model category. Sharing her inspiring journey of resilience, Dhanya connected with the audience through her experiences, offering encouragement to children living with rare conditions and their families.

Explaining the unique approach of the clinic, Dr. Eshwar T. Ramani, Clinic Lead and Senior Consultant in Paediatric Orthopaedics, said that bringing specialists from genetics, neurology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation together to assess a child on the same day is a distinctive model of care. He emphasised that the clinic aims to integrate the child's medical needs into a single, coordinated treatment plan while ensuring compassionate, family-centred care.

Dr. Ujwal George, Clinic Coordinator and Paediatric Orthopaedics specialist, explained that PRISM will provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment for conditions such as Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), skeletal growth disorders, muscular dystrophy, Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), cerebral palsy, genetic syndromes, scoliosis, and limb deformities.

Dr. Aj esh Nambiar V, Cluster Head and General Manager – Marketing, BMH, proposed the vote of thanks.
