Kannur: In a historic milestone for the healthcare sector in Kerala, medical professionals at Baby Memorial Hospital (BMH), Kannur, have successfully performed a rare bilateral diaphragmatic hernia surgery on a newborn baby. This marks the very first time such a complex procedure has been successfully executed on a neonate in the state of Kerala.
Bilateral diaphragmatic hernia is an exceptionally rare congenital anomaly where a critical defect in both sides of the diaphragm allows abdominal organs to migrate into the chest cavity, severely compromising lung development and cardiac function. Due to its extreme rarity and high mortality rate, correcting it requires immediate, highly sophisticated surgical intervention and flawless post-operative care.
The delicate procedure was made possible through the seamless, synchronized efforts of a highly skilled, multi-disciplinary team of specialists from Paediatrics & Neonatology, Cardiology, Interventional Radiology & Anesthesia.
The success of this groundbreaking operation relies heavily on a collaborative ecosystem, bringing together the following departments at BMH Kannur under the leadership and expertise of Dr. Sudhin S., Dr. Muhammed Abdul Nasar EK, Dr. Prasad Kumar, and Dr. Mohammed Jawad M.
