Overview

The Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at Baby Memorial Hospital is a centre of excellence for advanced gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and pancreatic surgeries. As a key pillar of the Institute of Liver and Gastro Sciences, this department delivers high-precision surgical care for diseases affecting the stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, and bile ducts. Our surgical team, comprising experienced GI surgeons works closely with medical gastroenterologists, hepatologists, oncologists, and anaesthetists to ensure safe, comprehensive, and personalised treatment.

We specialise in minimally invasive, laparoscopic, and robotic-assisted surgeries that reduce postoperative pain, shorten hospital stay, and enhance recovery. From laparoscopic cholecystectomy and complex liver resections to Whipple’s procedures and bariatric surgery, our surgical interventions are guided by cutting-edge technologies and evidence-based protocols. Special emphasis is placed on organ-preserving techniques, oncologic clearance, and perioperative safety.

The department is fully equipped with high-definition 3-chip camera systems, ultrasonic dissectors, harmonic scalpels, Ligasure systems, intraoperative ultrasound, and Argon Plasma Coagulators. These tools enable high-precision surgeries with minimal blood loss and faster rehabilitation. We also run an advanced liver transplant programme with both living donor and deceased donor transplantation options, backed by a specialised ICU and transplant coordination team.

Our surgical services cover the full spectrum of GI conditions, including gastrointestinal cancers, chronic pancreatitis, bile duct injuries, gastrointestinal strictures, achalasia cardia, GERD, hernias, morbid obesity, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Whether curative or palliative, all procedures are delivered with utmost focus on clinical outcomes, safety, and quality of life.
